Meet The Author #19 / Conociendo Autores #19 - Jeanne Ryan

If you don't speak Spanish, just continue reading.

It's been a while since I wrote my last interview in English. So, as I start studying English Philology at university I said "Let's do another one!".

Jeanne Ryan is the author of Nerve, a book which tries to prevent how dangerous can become the internet if we give them a part of our lives. Do you want to read why and how the author wrote this amazing book? Just read below!

ML: What inspired you to create Nerve? Where did the main idea come from?
JR: I was first inspired after watching my niece text her friends on her phone, while she simultaneously conducted conversations with her family. I thought it would be interesting to write a story that reflected the seamlessness between virtual and real worlds. I also was interested in how much information everyone was sharing online, and how reality show contestants were engaging in more and more extreme behaviors to get noticed.

ML:What would you be if you were Vee? Watcher or Player?
JR: A Watcher, for sure.
ML:Do you believe it would be possible to create an app like Nerve in real life?
JR: Technically, maybe. But I sure hope it doesn’t ever happen.

ML: What can you tell us about the end of the book? Was it supposed to be like it is from the beginning or did you change it on the progress of writing?
JR: It changed over the course of writing it. Normally, I like very neat, closed endings. But that didn’t feel authentic to the way things work on the internet, where once something is put out there, it can never really be “cleaned up” completely. So I hope the ending reflects that.

ML: Did you expect to have a film based on your book? How did you feel when you realized who were going to play the role of your main characters?
JR: I thought the story lent itself to an adaptation, and, like many authors, I hoped it would make the transition to film, but it was still a happy surprise when it all worked out. I think all of the actors cast for the film were excellent choices.

ML: At what point of your life did you decide to write your first book?
JR: I made the decision in fifth grade, after realizing I’d never have the physical build to play pro football. However, I didn’t actually do anything about my writing dream until about twelve years ago when I got serious about learning the craft and putting many thousands of words on paper. I wrote five full manuscripts before NERVE was purchased.

ML: What authors did influenced on your writing?
JR: When I read a great book such as THE BOOK THIEF by Markus Zusak or CODE NAME VERITY by Elizabeth Wein, I’m more inspired than influenced to write better myself. As for books that have helped me develop my craft, I’m a fan of WRITING THE BREAKOUT NOVEL by Donald Maass and SAVE THE CAT by Blake Snyder. Right now, I’m working through STORY GENIUS by Lisa Cron, which is making me think more deeply about my writing.

ML: Are you involved in some writing project at the moment?
JR: Yes, I’m working on something new, but it’s not developed enough to really discuss it yet.

ML: What famous author –dead or alive – would you like to co-write with?
JR: Good question. Writing is such a solitary pursuit, I don’t normally think about collaborating with other authors. That said, I think it would be fascinating to work with Charlie Brooker, the brilliant mind behind the TV show BLACK MIRROR.

ML: Could you give some advice to young writers? There are lots of teen writers that usually read this blog! What do you recommend us (I include myself because I’m also a young writer)?
JR: I’d say to keep a journal! Then you’ll have plenty of source material to draw from. Only you know exactly what it feels to be in your exact circumstances at this exact time. Beyond that, don’t be afraid to get started on a story. Yes, the first drafts will be awful, but everyone’s are. That’s what revision is for.

Did you enjoy the interview? You can let us know what you thought of it below! We'll answer your comments soon!
